Today is sadly my last day in Peru, so I’ll be in Lima most likely devouring all the ceviche I can find. While I’m busy stuffing my face, I have some awesome beauty suggestions from Trysh! I actually discovered Trysh’s amazing blog Prairie Beauty Love after I got matched as her Secret Santa in a CBB swap, and I’m really glad I did. She has a big passion for subscription boxes, finding deals, and of course, NYX, so make sure to check out her blog after you’re done here!
Hey there! This is Trysh from Prairie Beauty Love and Zoe asked me to pop in with a little guest post while she’s on vacation… and really, how could I possibly say no? I’m more than happy to be here!
I’ve been a fan of NYX for quite a while. Even before I was such a makeup junkie as I am now, I remember picking up some of the NYX single eyeshadows and absolutely loving them. The only place I had ever seen the brand back then was the small display in Zellers, so I didn’t really know anything about it other than that I loved the shades and the quality of those single shadows. Fast forward to now when NYX is much more well known and widely available, especially now that Target in Canada is offering much of the permanent line in their stores. Over the years since I bought those first, and now discontinued, single shadows until now, I’ve tried a lot of things from the line and I definitely have some solid favorites. Some favorites are long standing and some are fairly new, but they’re favorites all the same.
Without further adieu, in no particular order, here are my favorite products from NYX.
NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder Foundation
Want a matte finish to help you achieve a flawless complexion? The Stay Matte Not Flat Powder Foundation comes in a variety of gorgeous shades that provide the perfect finish to flatter all skin tones! You’ll look naturally flawless with minimal effort!
Now, I generally don’t use this as a foundation so much as a standard face powder, but there is definitely some coverage in here. For someone who prefers a powder foundation and a more light to medium type coverage, this could be a really good option. My preferred way to use this, however, is as a finishing powder when I’m wearing a BB cream. Since many BB creams tend to give a dewy or luminous finish and I find that those finishes tend to leave me shiny on my forehead within a couple of hours, I like to set those products with a powder to extend the time before the shine hits. The reason I like this product so much is that even though it’s a mattifying product I don’t find that it looks heavy on the skin. Instead, I feel like it gives me a really pretty, natural finish that manages to look quite like skin. My only complaint is that this does require a light hand when used over a cream product or it can end up looking powdery or cakey on the skin. Even still, I love this powder. And if you noticed that mine looks like it’s been through the war… that’s because it’s been on a great many travels with me in my purse and it’ll soon be time for a repurchase. Not the first of this powder and probably not the last.
NYX Mosaic Powder Blush in 08 Spice
This medley of 9 matte and shimmery colors creates a flush of color and dazzling glow for every skin tone. Use to highlight, enhance, brighten and bronze. Each mosaic of color blends beautifully with magical results.
This is another product that’s been through a lot with me and has no printing left on the lid to show it. I’m actually pretty amazed that I haven’t hit pan on this one yet because this is a staple for me in my collection. Whenever I want a no brainer blush or need something really natural and neutral, this is inevitably the blush that I reach for. Even though this is technically a shimmery product, I feel like it gives more of a luminosity on the cheeks than any kind of shimmeriness and I’ve never had any issue with the shimmer in this settling into my pores (and trust me, that’s an issue over here). Instead, I feel like this just gives me a healthy, natural looking glow to the cheeks that doesn’t really look too much like makeup. I would say that this particular shade is a very warm, midtoned pink and I think it would actually work quite nicely on a lot of different skintones. I like the texture of this product. It’s really soft and it applies to the cheeks without any powderiness at all. It’s just a smooth glow to the skin. I’m a huge fan of both this formulation and this particular shade.
NYX Butter Lip Gloss in 05 Creme Brulee
Buttery soft and silky smooth, our scrumptious new Butter Lip Gloss tastes as sweet as a sugar cookieóand makes your lips look downright luscious. Swipe it on alone or over your favorite lipstick for creamy sheer to medium coverage that melts onto your lips and is never sticky.
I’m sure this particular gloss in this particular shade has been talked to the moon, but I’m going to talk about it again. My favorite shades from this line are definitely the lighter, more nude type shades because I feel like they have a really flattering creamy look to them and manage to be really opaque and pigmented at the same time. I’ve never felt at all like this gloss is sticky or the least bit uncomfortable on the lips, which is pretty impressive since that tends to be my main reason for very, very rarely choosing to wear a gloss. This is definitely one of very, very few exceptions to my general distaste for lip glosses. Another thing I particularly like about this gloss is that there’s absolutely no shimmer in it. That’s becoming more and more common these days, but for a long time it was hard to find a gloss that didn’t have a significant amount of shimmer in it so this was a bit of a breath of fresh air. Honestly, if you don’t have this in your collection yet, you should. Because it’s really, really good.
NYX Butter Lipstick in 17 Pops
Pamper your lips with a hydrating kiss of smooth Butter Lipstick in 22 luxurious shades. The delicate texture of satin fused with the high color saturation creates an even finish on lips that’s long-wearing and beautiful.
I feel like I waited so very long for these lipsticks to be available in Canada. It’s pretty much a miracle that I didn’t go mad with power when I first saw them on the shelf, because it would have been easy to do. I even went so far as to send my mom along with a shopping list that included these to pick up at Ulta last year when she was on a business trip. But they were sold out. And I was sad. Alas, they are finally here and they definitely live up to what I was hoping for. The formula is creamy and comfortable with damn good pigmentation and wear. This shade in particular is my favorite in the collection because of it’s versatility and wearabiltity. This neutral mauve shade very much falls into the Your-Lips-But-Better category for me, which makes it really well paired with most makeup looks that are in my usual wheelhouse. It’s a great lipstick to throw in my bag to apply at stoplights, because it’s easy. And truth being told… sometimes when it comes to lip products, the biggest winners are often the ones that I can throw on at the last stop light before I get to work.
NYX Slide On, Glide On, Stay On & Definitely A Turn On Waterproof Eyeliner in 09 Tropical Green
Don’t let the softness of this pencil fool you. This formula doesn’t smear or smudge and delivers powerful, robust colors. It’s like a liquid eye liner without the mess. Available in 18 sleek shades.
And speaking of wearable… This deep but vibrant, shimmery emerald eyeliner might be a little scary to some, but I promise that it’s not at all as terrifying as you might think it is. First off, I have to say just how much I love these Slide On pencils in pretty much every color that I’ve tried. I own a few of these in some of the more vibrant and interesting shades, because I feel like they’re great to pull out when you want a look that’s a little more… more. I love this particular liner for applying to the upper lash line and dragging to a nice, sharp wing using an angled brush and I also really like it on the lower lashline for a pop of colour to give a look a little something special. I swear, there’s just something about this shade that gets me every time because it’s just really, really beautiful. And even though a deep emerald green might be scary to some, it’s actually really, really wearable and quite flattering. The runner up shade in this line for me is Jewel, which is a warm reddish purple shade that is just absolutely gorgeous.
So there you have it. My Top 5 favorite NYX products. All of these are really affordable and really get the job done, as far as I’m concerned. There are definitely a few products from NYX that I wouldn’t jump up and down to recommend, such as the new formulation of the eyeshadows, which I find to be not nearly as good as the old singles and trios, but a lot of what I’ve tried from the line has been really solid quality for the price. What’s your favorite product from NYX? Anything not mentioned here that I absolutely must try? Thanks again to Zoe for having me!
