I know a lot of beauty bloggers swear by coconut oil as a beauty tool but honestly I had only ever used it as a cooking ingredient until I was introduced to Skinny & Co. Coconut Oil Skincare. Skinny & Co. is the only raw and alkaline coconut oil on the market because they use an extraction technique that is heat-free. Instead, they cool the coconut to release the oil, making it the closest you can get to raw coconut in a jar! As a result, each jar takes three times longer than other processes, and a single jar uses 12 coconuts.
Although the signature Skinny & Co. product is definitely their pure Coconut Oil (available for sale at Sephora) they actually have a whole range of coconut oil products on their website as well. I received the Skinny & Co. Coconut Oil*, Facial Oil*, Body Butter*, Bamboo Spoon* and Lip Balm* to try out.
I’ll be honest, with so many Skinny & Co. products designed explicitly for skincare, I actually didn’t use the Skinny & Co. Coconut Oil on my face. Instead I saved this for one of my favourite uses of coconut oil, POPCORN. It’s a great way to add a slightly ‘buttery’ flavour to popcorn. However, because of how high quality Skinny & Co. Coconut Oil is, it’s very expensive to use as a food product and much more affordable if you think of it as skincare instead. You can easily use it as a makeup remover, facial oil, or even body moisturizer. I can definitely smell the difference between this and the cheaper, lower quality coconut oil I’ve used in the past, this actually smells more like coconuts!
The Skinny & Co. Facial Oil contains pure coconut oil as well as calming lavender and chamomile essential oils. I really like the scent which I find quite soothing, and since I’m actually not a fan of coconut scents I don’t find it noticeable because of the lavender in particular. I liked using this as a makeup remover, because it gets away even that stubborn mascara without irritating my skin at all. That said, I do like to use a second product (usually Bioderma) afterwards just to get any remaining residue off my skin. You can use this as a moisturizer on its own, but it isn’t something I have done yet.
The Skinny & Co. Body Butter is a body butter that contains Coconut Oil as well as almond and essential oils including lavender, sweet basil and chamomile. It has a unique ‘whipped’ consistency to it that’s very lightweight and great scent that is more subtle than the Facial Oil.
I have used solid body butters before and I have used body oils before, but the Skinny & Co. Body Butter is really cool because it feels like a body butter but then melts into your skin as it turns into an oil. Even though it’s an oil, it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy and it even worked after a shower (I did dry off first). I think it’s really nourishing during this winter weather and would be a great product if you have sensitive skin.
To go with all their coconut oil blends, you can also pick up a lovely Skinny & Co. 100% Natural Bamboo Spoon. I think this is a great product to store with your coconut oils to keep them clean and hygienic. It also helps you reach the bottom of the jar without getting it all in your nails (although coconut is a great moisturizer for cuticles!).
The final product I’ve been using is the Skinny & Co. Lip Balm. I was a little concerned because coconut oil does melt, but this also contains beeswax, as well as vitamin E and Medicinal Grade Peppermint Essential Oil. While I wouldn’t carry it around in my pocket, it’s definitely stayed solid even in my warm bathroom. It has a peppermint scent and an immediately ‘cooling’ sensation when applied to the lips. It’s actually quite thin, and almost like applying a lip gloss. It’s definitely comfortable, but it’s not as intensive a lip treatment as I would have hoped for this winter weather.
I don’t try out a lot of natural beauty or skincare brands so it was really interesting testing out the Skinny & Co. Coconut Oil Skincare because what I remembered is, you really don’t need a trillion ingredients to make good skincare. Besides their classic Coconut Oil, my personal favourite product is definitely the Skinny & Co. Body Butter and if you are looking for moisturizer with all natural ingredients either as a gift or for yourself I definitely recommend checking it out. There’s actually a (sadly currently sold out) version with Jojoba and Rose that sounds pretty amazing too!
Have you ever used coconut oil before? What for?
