Nothing says summer like neon polishes, and every year OPI releases an adorable collection of minis in scorching bright neon shades. This year is the first time full size bottles of all shades have been available as well, but I’ve got the mini set, OPI Little Bits of Neon Summer 2014*, which includes all 6 shades, to share.
The OPI Little Bits of Neon Summer 2014 collection comes with 6 neon shades that you could brighten up even more if you wanted to by using a white base coat underneath. However, I usually find that technique a bit annoying and wanted to see how these polishes stood out on their own. Honestly, with maybe one exception these shades don’t even need a white base anyway.
The first shade in the OPI Little Bits of Neon Summer 2014 set is Juice Bar Hopping, a bright neon orange that layered to nearly full opacity with 3 coats. There’s a hint of VNL but nothing that bothers me, and the formula was really good, drying to a semi-matte, latex-like, finish. It’s one of my favourite shades from the set, and I don’t even like orange.
In the bottle, Life Gave Me Lemons from the OPI Little Bits of Neon Summer 2014 was one of my favourites from the collection, but even with 3 coats it wasn’t full opaque and could probably have benefited from a fourth. Also, this polish stains, so be careful. It dries pretty quickly but I do find it to be a bit streaky, and as nice as the yellow with a greenish tint shade is, I was surprised to see it outshone by its orange companion Juice Bar Hopping.
The green in the OPI Little Bits of Neon Summer 2014 set is called You Are So Outta Lime! (I just love the OPI puns!) and it’s actually not quite as neon as I would have expected. This creamy green shade was a bit thicker but still needed 3 coats.
The only shade in the OPI Little Bits of Neon Summer 2014 collection that I’d probably pair with a white base Push & Pur-Pull, a sheer dark purple which seems pretty jelly-like and squishy to me. There was still obvious VNL with three coats, although it dried quickly to a neon semi-matte finish. If I was going to wear this polish without a white base, I think it would look really pretty topped with a silver glitter.
The final two shades in the OPI Little Bits of Neon Summer 2014 are both very neon and very summery, starting with a Hotter Than You Pink, an insanely bright hot pink with a bit of frost and a blue-ish shimmer to it. I was surprised by how much I liked this one, it’s just such a great summer shade and I think it would look great with tanned skin (out of a bottle is okay too!)
I really like Down to the Core-al, the final shade in the OPI Little Bits of Neon Summer 2014 collection although sadly it is a bit streaky because of how fast it dries. Probably the most matte out of all six, there’s a bit of a shimmer/frost to this neon coral polish that would look really pretty with a glossy top coat. Who am I kidding, I top coat everything!
