I’ve loved MAC lipsticks, eyeshadows, and even concealer, but I’ve actually never tried a mascara from the brand until the MAC Upward Lash Mascara in Upwardblack*, which launched this August.
When I first saw the MAC Upward Lash Mascara in store I thought it was a giant lipstick, because the packaging is very similar except for the base being more elongated.
When you unscrew the top of the MAC Upward Lash Mascara, it immediately becomes obvious that this mascara is a bit different. The rubber brush is both narrow and short, with very small bristles. It’s even smaller than my MAKE UP FOR EVER Smoky Stretch, and definitely takes a little practice to get used to handling. The first few times I used it I did get mascara on my lid as well, but I have gotten more comfortable with it over time.
The MAC Upward Lash Mascara formula is pretty wet and also intensely black and pigmented. Combining the very nubby bristles with a wet formula means that this is not a mascara that really separates lashes, so they can clump together a bit. However, it really does lift up my lashes and adds plenty of length as well as some volume which can be build up with more coats. To me, the end result is a bit rockstar lashes.
Although I’m not totally in love with the mascara itself, I have no complaints when it comes how the MAC Upward Lash Mascara lasts. I find mascaras flake on me quite often but that hasn’t been an issue, and my lashes hold their curl until the end of the day.
Although I appreciate that the MAC Upward Lash Mascara has an innovative take on the mascara brush, I honestly prefer something that allows me a better separation of lashes. Still, the MAC Upward Lash Mascara has a long-lasting, intensely black formula that gives a great curl and length to your lashes that might just be what you’re looking for on a night out.
