It’s been awhile since I reviewed a mascara because I somehow have 800 open tubes and couldn’t really justify starting a new one. Of course, then I was sent the brand new L’Oreal Voluminous Superstar Mascara* and the 2-in-1 formula caught my interest, and here we are.
L’Oreal Voluminous Superstar Mascara comes in a silver and black tube with one side for primer and the other for mascara. Each side is clearly labelled, but the ends come to a point so you aren’t able to store it standing up on its own. I have the shade Blackest Black, but it is also available in Black, Black Brown and Waterproof Blackest Black.
While the primer end of the L’Oreal Voluminous Superstar Mascara has a slight hourglass shape to the brush, the mascara wand is curved with natural bristles. I thought both brushes did a good job, and I actually really liked the curved shape of the mascara wand which is unusual since I tend to prefer rubber bristles, but it was difficult to get those innermost baby hairs with the brush.
I applied one coat of the L’Oreal Voluminous Superstar Mascara primer and then immediately followed with one coat of the mascara. I’m not sure if you are supposed to wait, but I didn’t notice any difference when I did. The primer is white and I definitely noticed that it lengthened my lashes. The mascara actually has fibres in it, and I thought it did a great job thickening up my lashes. I’ve had bad experiences in the past with primers where I found the mascara didn’t really “coat” it and you could still see white bits, but that was not the case with this one.
Applied, I found that the L’Oreal Voluminous Superstar Mascara gave a nice boost of volume and length to my lashes, as well as a slight curl. I’ve worn this mascara without any other eye makeup and still really felt put-together because of how nice my lashes looked. I have tried it with a second coat which adds even more volume, but I wouldn’t go any more to avoid spidery lashes.
My biggest concern with mascara is flaking, and I don’t know if the primer helps but I’ve been quite happy with the L’Oreal Voluminous Superstar Mascara and haven’t noticed any flaking unless I’m rubbing my eyes. I also find that my lashes remain quite flexible throughout the day, they don’t have that crunchy feeling. My regular oil cleanser removes the mascara with no issues.
I’ve also reviewed the L’Oreal Miss Manga Mascara and L’Oreal Miss Manga Rock Mascara on Writing Whimsy, and out of the three, the L’Oreal Voluminous Superstar Mascara is definitely my favourite. I think the primer step helps add extra volume and length to my lashes and I really love the boost this mascara gives to my lashes.
