At the beginning of the year, I made a commitment to buy (basically) no makeup in 2015. There was a tiny bit of flexibility, but that was the general goal. To encourage each other, I partnered up with Natalie and Jodi for a little event we called Lipstick February, where we promised to do our best to wear a different lip colour each day of the month.
Lipstick February is a great way to shop our stash and reminder what we have, plus it gives me a chance to feature some previously unseen lip shades on Writing Whimsy. I will miss a few days–I already have, due to travel– but so far I am super motivated and having a ton of fun with this event. You can follow along on Instagram (@writingwhimsy) but I’m also planning to do weekly recaps sharing the products along with a mini review.
And yes, I have more than 28 lip products, but you probably guessed that already!
To start of Lipstick February, I went with the lipstick included in the MAKE UP FOR EVER Give In To Me Makeup Kit I was testing out. I originally topped it with the gloss, which also looks great and you can see me wearing it that way in the review of the set. However afterwards I did wear it on its own. This is a really creamy lipstick, although not super-long lasting as a result. It is a great, easy to wear, neutral (my favourites, as will soon be quite obvious!). The only MUFE lipstick I’d tried before was the MAKE UP FOR EVER Rouge Artiste Natural in N29, which had glitter in it, so it was lovely to try N4, which I much prefer and will definitely get a lot of wear out of.
Oh, I love the Revolution Lipsticks from Urban Decay. I own two shades, and they were my first high end lipsticks. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Naked was actually a Secret Santa gift, although I had previously purchased Manic. Despite being a neutral pinky shade, this lipstick is actually lasts a few hours, has even coverage that doesn’t bleed, and is still quite comfortable on my lips. Although the goal of this project is to shop my stash and remind me of what I have, but wearing this shade just reminded me how much I love these lipsticks…
Also on my face: MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microperfecting Primer in #1 Green*, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Glow Sheers Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer, MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Cream Blush in #225*, Essence Cream Highlighter in Light Up!*, Benefit Gimme Brow, Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color Quad in Sandstone*, Benefit They’re Real! Mascara, Collection Lasting Perfection Ultimate Wear Concealer in Fair, Guerlain Meteorites Compact in Clair 02*
I kept promising Jenn that I would wear my Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick in Playful, and in combination with a promise to try to include at least a couple colourful shades in Lipstick February, I decided to wear it out of the house for the first time. The formula is incredibly creamy, but still does a decent job lasting and leaves behind a faint stain. However it’s definitely not transfer-proof. It is actually so creamy I worry a bit about breaking the lipstick in the tube. I believe these lipsticks have been discontinued, although I’m not sure why, as at least this shade is very opaque, incredibly comfortable, and gorgeous on the lips.

I was inspired to reach for my L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Wet Shine Stains again after seeing Jenn’s post on her YSL lovelies. These were originally described as a dupe for the YSL Glossy Stains, and although I don’t have any of those to compare, my impression is that they are similar in consistency although not necessarily pigment. It’s a watery gel you apply, and it goes on quite smoothly. I apply about three coats and while it is quite glossy, as seen in my picture, it does dry slightly, helping them last and avoid transferring. There is also a very small amount of tackiness when you press your lips together. In terms of this shade, the L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Rose On and On is a really pretty rose pink shade that is just neutral and sheer enough to still be in my comfort zone.
Also on my face: L’Oreal Magic Nude Liquid Powder*, MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Cream Blush in #225*, Essence Cream Highlighter in Light Up!*, Benefit Gimme Brow, Flower Color Play Creme Eyeshadow in Marigold, Benefit They’re Real! Mascara, Collection Lasting Perfection Ultimate Wear Concealer in Fair, Guerlain Meteorites Compact in Clair 02*
I loved L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Rose On and On so much I had to wear my second shade and picked out L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Lilac Ever After for the following day. It’s very similar in formulation and application, although this shade has some gold shimmer in it. I’d also say it’s even more sheer than Rose On and Rose, but I really do love the effect with a couple of layers. I will definitely not be neglecting these again after Lipstick February is over!

This was a bit of a sick day, but it was also the day I left for vacation so I wanted to get one more lipstick in. Except I wasn’t quite in a lipstick mood, so I just went with a tinted balm. I included Palladio Herbal Tinted Lip Balm in Brownie in my Marsala post, as well as previous favourites, but have never actually shown it lip-swatched. As you can tell, it’s a really pretty tinted balm with a decent amount of pigment that is comfortable to wear. I really love the shade! However, I do apply it with a mirror because, as a balm, it is flat on top and so you have to make sure you don’t get it outside your lips–at least if they are thinner, like mine.
Well that’s it for a nearly-complete Lipstick February Week One! Return in approximately week for approximately another week worth of lipstick (I already missed two days, whoops). What do you think of these products? I may be tempted into doing some full reviews, but I feel like I’ve pretty much covered them in this post.
