Kona Kare Lip Butter Balm Review + INTERNATIONAL GIVEAWAY

I’ve been trying (a little bit!) to go more natural with my beauty products. Combining the fact that I’m a bit of a lip balm addict with a small Canadian business, and I definitely had to order the Kona Kare Lip Butter Balms when I saw they were on promotion (they’re on an even better promotion now if you’re interested!) I paid $12 for the entire collection of four different scented lip balms, or what Kona Kare calls “lip butter balm”. Full price they retail for $10 CAD each.

I admit that up front I wasn’t insanely impressed with some of the branding by of Kona Kare Essensual Lip Butter Balms, I really dislike brands with misspelled names (Kare) or made up words (Essensual), and I think the term “lip butter balm” is an unnecessary mouthful.

However, what I was super impressed by was the product itself, starting with the way that it arrived.

Kona Kare Lip Butter Balm

It is clear that you are getting a Canadian-made product which a lot of care and love went into it. The wonderful owners, Mikayla and Nadim, even wrote me a handwritten note thanking me for my purchase! What care and attention to detail. The package also shipped extremely quickly and arrived soon after, safely in a bubble mailer. Shipping is also free, no matter your order size, for Canadian and US customers. Other customers can contact Kona Kare directly to get a shipping quote.

Inside the tissue paper were my four Kona Kare Lip Butter Balms, each with its own individual packaging and information card. This packaging is great when the product is going to be a gift, as one of mine is. That way the person getting it also knows how awesome it is!

The Kona Kare Lip Butter Balms come in 4 flavours: The Original One, French Vanilla, Peaches and Dream, and Chocolate Peppermint. All four are all natural, preservative-free, cruelty-free and handmade with monoi de Tahiti oil.

The all natural ingredients in Kona Kare Lip Butter Balms are: Glycine Soja (Soy) butter, Cnadelilla Cera, Mangifera Indica (Mango) seed butter, Cera Laba, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) oil, Persea Americana (Avocado) oil, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) oil, Gardenia Tahitensis Flower Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) and Flavour.

They all smell delicious, nothing chemical or artificial, and are fortunately “taste”-free. However I have an easy favourite from the collection, Peaches and Dream, which is a creamy peach scent I adore. I hope that Kona Kare decides to expand their range of products, as currently they only carry Lip Butter Balms, and continue to use this delicious scent!

On the lips, the Kona Kare Lip Butter Balms are incredibly shiny though transparent. It would be great on top of a lipstick, or just for a natural glow. They are really hydrating, although like most lip balms need to be re-applied fairly regularly.

As for how the Kona Kare Lip Butter Balm applies? Like a dream! I know that I said I find the name “Lip Butter Balm” annoying, but the product truly is a mix between a lip butter and a balm. Although the format is in a balm shape with an easy to use and hygienic roll-up tube, the consistency of it is incredibly smooth and rich and basically applies like a lip butter you’d find in a pot. You definitely only need one coat of these.

Unfortunately, possibly because of the high oil content, you have to be careful with these in hot weather. Carrying one around in my pocket and leave it quite ‘soft’ which means that it got a bit mushy in the tube when I applied it. I would recommend carrying it somewhere less warm, like a purse, or putting it somewhere cool to properly harden before using. That’s just what happens when you have a lip product made out of truly natural ingredients!

One thing I should mention in my review. When I received my Kona Kare Lip Butter Balms, I went right to use on the Peaches and Dream flavour. However it seemed like no time when I realized I was getting pretty far down in the tube, and although it applies quite thick and shiny, it still surprised me. I decided to check out the amount in my brand new tubes to see how they compared, and that’s when I realized that at least 2 of my tubes weren’t really full products.

I knew that Kona Kare was hand-poured so I post-poned writing this review and emailed the company with my photos and questions. I heard back IMMEDIATELY, and I mean less than 2 hours later on a Saturday night, with an explanation and apology. All their lip balms are hand-poured to the same size, except for donation orders, and there must have been a mix up with my Kona Kare Lip Butter Balms. Even though at least one my products (the vanilla on the right) was probably the correct size, Kona Kare quickly shipped me four brand new lip balms along with another hand written note apologizing for the mix up.

The whole process was incredibly fast and incredibly friendly, and I have never been more impressed by customer service than with Kona Kare. Mikayla and Nadim have definitely made Kona Kare a company I wouldn’t hesitate to re-order from, both for their genuine personal touch and for their wonderful product.
