There are so many exciting KISS Winter 2015 releases, and I’ll be sharing a bunch more of them soon, but there’s one in particular I reached for as soon as it arrived, the KISS Salon Secrets Glitter Science Kit*. I mean, this thing combines two of my favourite things GLITTER and SCIENCE. It’s just such a fun concept and a perfect way to glam up your nails for New Year’s tomorrow.
The KISS Salon Secrets Glitter Science Kit includes everything you need to create two of your own custom glitter polishes. First, there are 2 clear polish bases, 7 different glitters, 4 shaking balls to add the to polishes as well as 4 heart-shaped blank labels, a mixing test tube and 2 wooden sticks to help mix the glitter, and finally a funnel for adding the glitter to your polish base.
The KISS Salon Secrets Glitter Science Kit comes with 7 different glitters: matte hot pink hexes “Mineral Salts”, tiny and medium sized metallic silver hexes “Metallic Elements”, a gold, green, and red mix of different sizes “Plasma Particles”, matte white bars and hexes “Ion Icicles”, blue and white iridescent stars with a fine shimmer, little hexes and bars “Galaxy of Stars”, pale and bright red bars with black hexes and tiny pale red hexes “Lava Crystals”, and finally, fine gold glitter with small and medium iridescent hexes “Gilded Glitters”.
Honestly, each of these glitters would make a stunning polish on its own since most of them already contain a cool mix of glitters, but blending them together makes for so many more unique possibilities.
Even though it might seem like you can use any glitter and clear nail polish to create your own glitter polish, you actually need special glitter if you want your custom polish to last. A lot of glitter bleeds into the clear base and dissolves over time. That’s why indie polish makers have to test their polishes for months and why glitter intended for use in polish, like the ones included in the KISS Salon Secrets Glitter Science Kit, are a much better option.
For my first custom glitter polish using the KISS Salon Secrets Glitter Science Kit I went for a fun blend of “Mineral Salts” and “Metallic Elements”. I used the funnel to pour the pink and silver in about equal parts in the mixing test tube, and the wooden stick to blend them together. Then I added 2 shaking balls to my clear base, before pouring my custom glitter mix in using the funnel.
I really wanted my glitter to be full loaded, and although it looks that way, I honestly could have added even more. I only used about half of each shade from the KISS Salon Secrets Glitter Science Kit. The shaking balls are necessary, since I found the glitter really does settle to the bottom, but it is easy to mix up again.
I applied two coats of my custom glitter from the KISS Salon Secrets Glitter Science Kit over MAC Unzipped (reviewed here). It definitely needed two coats, but that’s my fault for not adding more glitter. I really loved the final blend though, I think it looks great! I did find the polish was fairly slow to dry, but using two coats didn’t help.
I just really love the KISS Salon Secrets Glitter Science Kit. I think this would make a great gift for a beauty lover of any age, because it’s such a creative, fun way to experiment with polish. It reminds me of being a kid and adding random things together in the kitchen to come up with something new, except the resulting polish is actually wearable. I really hope KISS comes out with more “science” kits like this in the future!
What do you think? Would you use a Glitter Science Kit?
