…and now for something brand new.
I’ve always been a bit camera-shy on Writing Whimsy. I don’t have a camera that’s equipped for taking photos of yourself (not even my phone) as there’s no way to see the image except through the view-finder, but as I move more into a general beauty and life blog and less strictly nail polish, I want to be able to, when I feel comfortable, share that makeup on an actual person. So I guess that’s going to be me! Hence, my first “Face of the Day” which I thought was a great way to show some of the products I’m using lately, and that you will likely see reviews of (including swatches).
A few of the normal disclaimers–– I’m not a makeup artist, I wasn’t even interested in makeup until recently so I’m still learning my way around it but I’m having fun and definitely not an expert! Okay, here it goes… (I’m very nervous!)
I wore this “look” to work which is also called grad school and liked that it is subtle while still adding a little something. The lip is really bold for me, but because it’s a tint it managed to look pretty natural and I even had the confidence to reapply it later in the day when it wore off. Here’s what I used to get ready.
I started off with Rimmel Clean Finish Foundation in 240 Soft Beige*, it’s a bit dark for me but using a lighter powder on top helps even it out. I think this foundation is really nice but it doesn’t have the best oil control so I topped it with Maybelline Fit Me Powder in 320 Honey Beige using my Make Up For Ever 122 Blending Powder Brush* which I am absolutely in love with, it’s so soft on my face and does such a nice job with the powder. The powder itself is good although I’m super excited over. It doesn’t really give any coverage on its own but it helps set my foundation and I’m pretty sure I paid $3 for it so I can’t complain. The shade is also lighter than my foundation which helps match my skin better.
After that I use the Essence Lash & Brow Gel Mascara on my brows. I have fairly thick brows and definitely appreciate this step! Then I add some colour to my cheeks using the NYX Stick Blush in 05 Tea Rose. This blush is a new product to me but I like it a lot, I think the colour is really natural and long-lasting, and I apply it by just dabbing it onto the tops of my cheeks and blending it out a bit with my finger. If I think it’s too dark, and to help it stick, I might add some more powder on top.
Then it’s time for my eyes, which I am generally really simple with (I wear glasses), but especially so in this look where I just used a layer of L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in 892 Amber Rush across the lid. This shadow is so pretty, and I think especially so on brown and hazel eyes. I had a hard time getting it but I’m glad I did, it was definitely worth it. I use an ELF Eyeshadow “C” Brush to apply the shadow, which is from their studio line and a great deal and a great brush! I think I need more so I don’t have to clean it all the time. After I’ve applied my shadow, I add a coat of Benefit They’re Real! Mascara which I got as a part of my Sephora birthday gift this month. I had just finished up my last mascara so I decided to test out this one, and I am in love with it. I’m trying to swap for a few back ups!
The final thing I have to add to my makeup before I’m done is lips, which is probably my favourite part. In this case I decided to wear Lush Santa Baby Lip Tint* which is a brand new limited edition lip tint from Lush. I love how buildable it is, so you don’t have to get that scary bright red that it first appears, which is especially good for somebody like me who is scared of the bold lip. The lip tint isn’t a moisturizing product at all, so I usually reapply some lip balm throughout the day as well.
So there’s my very first Face of the Day! I don’t know when I’ll have the confidence to try another one, but let me know what you think and if there are any products you want to see reviewed right away!
