Yesterday I shared one of my fall favourites, the gorgeous polish essie Angora Cardi, but having a lovely base is only half the battle, what really makes a polish shine (and last) is a great top coat. My own top coat of choice is actually one I can’t find anymore, so as I watch my backups disappear I’m continuing to search for a replacement, which is what I was hoping for with the essie Gel Setter Top Coat*.
The essie Gel Setter Top Coat is a top coat meant to give your polishes that glossy gel look and increased lasting power, without the horrible removal. Although the packaging says to use it on top of essie polishes, it works the same on other brands.
The essie Gel Setter Top Coat has a traditional essie brush that’s smaller than many other brands, but I like for precision. The top coat dries very quickly, and although it may take a tiny bit longer than Seche Vite, to be completely dry, it doesn’t have that toxic scent. The formula is also not as thick, so hopefully it will last longer.
The finish that essie Gel Setter Top Coat gives is very glossy and shiny, but also incredibly hard to capture on camera. I definitely feel like it’s one of the more gel-like, glossier top coats I’ve tried. While it doesn’t quite give gel longevity to a polish, I definitely find my polish looks good a day or two longer than normal. I had 4 to 5 days before my nails starting looking rough, which is pretty impressive for me!
I do have a stockpile of top coats at the moment, but once I finish a few up the essie Gel Setter Top Coat is definitely one I would purchase in the future. I love the shine and the extra wear it gives polishes. You can find my thoughts on other base and top coats from essie (including my favourite Ridge Filling Base Coat) here.
