For fall, Clarins has curated two separate “look” packages that include everything you need for a stunning day or night look. These are centred around two gorgeous eyeshadow palettes–I’ve swatched them in person and they are lovely! However, the looks also include a lipstick, an eyeliner and a single shadow. I have two of the new products to share today which are the Clarins Crayon Kohl in True Violet*, from the day look, and the Clarins Ombre Matte in Carbon*, from the night look.
The packaging on the Clarins Crayon Kohl in True Violet and the Clarins Ombre Matte in Carbon is in line with other shades already available, since I believe these are permanent editions, while the palettes are limited edition. I always find Clarins packaging to be classic and sleek, and I find the consistency of the red boxes slightly comforting.
Well, I can’t avoid it any longer. Let’s start off with the product I really didn’t like. I was shocked because I adore the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Waterproof Eye Pencil in Aquatic Green I tried this summer, but the formula for the Clarins Crayon Kohl in True Violet is something I would never reach for. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a Kohl, but it’s very hard so you have to press down quite a bit to get colour, and then you have to do multiple passes on your eye to build it up, which is a pretty terrible combination. The Clarins Crayon Kohl in True Violet has a weird brush on one end for smudging, but I don’t think it looks very good that way. I also tried it on my waterline which was basically just me stabbing myself in the eye. If you want a creamy, long-lasting liner I highly recommend going for the Waterproof Eye Pencil formula instead. I’m not sure if it’s just this new shade that’s such an issue, but I was so disappointed!
Now that the bad is out of the way, let’s talk about the product I adored, which is the Clarins Ombre Matte in Carbon. This comes in a small pot and it is a powder but it almost feels like a cream because of how nice the consistency is. I tried a matte shade from the fall collection last year, as well as a knockout shimmery shade this summer, and loved both, so I’m so glad to see Clarins expand the line even more. Clarins Ombre Matte in Carbon is an intense black–my swatch is a single swipe! However I don’t find it to be 100% matte, as there’s a slight shimmer to it. It’s the kind of shade I wore as a one shadow look in high school, and although I don’t recommend that, it is super pretty to include as a part of another look, especially if you want to take it from day to night. The formula is just flawless, and it may be super dark but it also blends great as a compliment to other shades. There’s a new shade called Heather that looks like a really pretty dusty purple.
A purple eyeliner and a black eyeshadow aren’t the best two products for creating an eyelook, so I cheated and called in help from a third product, the Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in Masquerade. I used Masquerade all over that lid, and the Clarins Ombre Matte in Carbon in the outer corner and into the crease. I tried to use the Clarins Crayon Kohl in True Violet on my lower lash line and waterline, but wasn’t very successful. I finished off the look with a coat of the Dior Diorshow Mascara in Purple.
Well, that’s my opinion on one flop and one star from the Clarins Fall 2015 Collection. Clarins is a brand I adore, but not every product is going to be perfect, so I recommend skipping the Clarins Crayon Kohl in True Violet but definitely giving the Clarins Ombre Matte line a try!
Do you have a favourite Clarins product? I adore their lip products and I have a few new ones to share with you very soon (hopefully tomorrow!)
