I just love those little red Clarins boxes. This is a brand that consistently puts out well-curated collections which are wearable but original and the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer 2015 Collection was all about greens and bronzes which are the perfect shades for these warm months. There’s also an emphasis on waterproof makeup, which is great not only for beach days, but for when you might be a little more sweaty.
I tried out five different products from the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer 2015 Collection: the Clarins Instant Light Complexion Illuminating Base in Golden Caramel*, Clarins Ombre Iridescente in Aquatic Grey*, the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer Bronzing Compact*, the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Waterproof Eye Pencil in Aquatic Green* and the Clarins Truly Waterproof Mascara in Aquatic Green*. Basically, I got to try one of everything, but there are more shades available for everything but the bronzer.
So settle in because I have
mini (apparently I don’t know what mini means) reviews on each of the products I tried from the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer 2015 Collection, and then I put them all together at the end for a summery FOTD.
I actually tried the Clarins Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in Champagne (02) (a permanent shade) last year, and I really loved the results. It’s a fantastic base product for adding a bit of glow to my skin, and it also works well on its own, so I’ve made a pretty good dent in my tube. For summer, Clarins came out with two new limited edition shades that help give you that bronzed look. I received the Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in Golden Caramel (05), but there is also a lighter shade, Apricot (04) for fairer skin. As expected for a shade intended for darker skin tones, the Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in Golden Caramel (or Golden Bronze, as the tube says?) is definitely too dark and orange for my skin. However, it really does blend in and by applying a thin layer I was able to wear it. On me, I think it is best used on specific areas as a cream bronzer, or underneath a light coverage foundation, however if you have darker skin it provides a really nice golden glow.
When I first heard about the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Collection, I was most excited about the eyeshadows (more on that coming) and this Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer Bronzing Compact. Every year Clarins comes out with an amazing, intricate bronzer and I can completely understand how somebody could end up collecting them because…pretty!
The Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer Bronzing Compact is a large (20 grams) sturdy red compact which is transparent, revealing a design similar to the one inside. There’s a mirror on the lid, and the bronzer itself contains four different shades as well as a detailed aquatic-inspired embossing. It’s so pretty I didn’t want to swatch it (the things I do for blogging…)
For somebody with a makeup collection that is definitely excessive, I actually don’t really own any bronzer because I usually don’t wear it. However, once I got past my nerves and swatched the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer Bronzing Compact, I fell in love. It’s silky but not powdery, and the four colours swirl together to give a perfect warm bronzed glow that works perfectly on my NC15-20 skin. The finish is mostly satin but there are some fine, subtle gold sparkles.
I know this sold out right away in most places (and for good reason) but if you can get your hands on it, it is definitely worth it. Not only is the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer Bronzing Compact shade really great for lighter skin tones but it has an amazing design so this will actually be the first full-sized bronzer I keep in my collection!
As amazingly stunning as the bronzer in the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Collection is, I honestly didn’t know quite how much I would fall in love with it. However, from the first glimpses online, I knew I would love the Clarins Ombre Iridescente shadows. This is a new, shimmery version of the shadows and I had previously tried the Clarins Ombre Matte Eyeshadow in Nude Pink, which was a part of the Fall 2014 Collection. I really liked that shadow, but it was quite subtle, and there is nothing subtle about the Clarins Ombre Iridescente in Aquatic Grey. The Clarins Ombre Iridescente Shadows come in the same pot packaging although this time the lids are colour-coordinated to the shadow inside, which is a feature I always love because it makes them easy to tell apart. The Clarins Ombre Iridescente in Aquatic Grey is definitely a powder eyeshadow, but it has a very ‘creamy’, buttery formula to it. The shade itself is a purple-leaning grey that is very pigmented and gives a stunning, reflective look on the eye. The wear was also really good.
There are two other Clarins Ombre Iridescente Shadows shades available (a rose gold and a green) and they are both gorgeous as well. I really, really hope that Clarins decides to bring this shimmery formula back again–hopefully for good.
I know I wear a lot of neutral eyeshadow, but I feel like I am always saying how much I love a pop of colour on the lower lash line, and guess what, Clarins listened. The limited edition Clarins Aquatic Treasures Waterproof Eye Pencil in Aquatic Green does have to be sharpened, and it has a pencil on one end and a smudger on the other. It’s a very pigmented shade that applies smoothly but isn’t so buttery it smudges (unless you use the smudger, of course). If you use a waterproof pencil, you want it to last, and I was quite impressed with the wear of the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Waterproof Eye Pencil in Aquatic Green. It didn’t last all day on my waterline (nothing does) but it stuck around until I went to sleep on my lower lash line and still looked perfect. You do need a waterproof makeup remover to get it off, but it’s a perfect choice for hot and
possibly sweaty days.
Finally, there’s the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Truly Waterproof Mascara in Aquatic Green, a dark teal perfect for mermaid lashes. Waterproof mascaras are great when you might be in the water, or just getting sweaty, and I think the teal colour is subtle but fun.
In addition to giving a fun dash of colour, the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Truly Waterproof Mascara in Aquatic Green has a lengthening formula that is great at separating the lashes and gives a tad of volume as well. It’s not going to give you super dramatic lashes, but it’s really pretty, unique, and it lasts all day. I usually avoid waterproof because of the removal process, and it was a bit more effort than usual, but definitely not what I was scared of.
For my Clarins Aquatic Treasures makeup look, I first applied a thin layer of the Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in Golden Caramel all over my face blending it out quite a bit. I concentrated the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer Bronzing Compact on my cheeks, and add some more to the areas of my face that get extra sun. I used the Clarins Ombre Iridescente in Aquatic Grey all over the lid and the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Waterproof Eye Pencil in Aquatic Green on the lower lash line.
I applied the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Truly Waterproof Mascara in Aquatic Green to both my upper and lower lashes. Oh, and if you are interested in that super pretty lip shade, it’s the Joli Rouge Brilliant Perfect Shine Sheer Lipstick in Pink Orchid from last summer, and I highly recommend this comfortable, glossy lipsticks for summer. My glow did get a boost from the Becca Champagne Pop Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed (review coming soon!) because what’s summer without some highlight?
I am always really impressed by the quality of Clarins makeup, but I’ve got to admit I find the Summer 2015 Collection especially stunning. My personal standouts are the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Summer Bronzing Compact and Ombre Iridescente (I need more), but that mascara is pretty great too and well…What’s your favourite? I take it back, I can’t decide!
